Organic sturgeon aquaculture in Wolong Lake

As part of the management of the Wolong National Nature Reserve, a project to restore Wolong Lake was established. For the record, it should be remembered that fish farming played a major economic role in Wolong Lake. But conventional industrial fish farming without control of discharges once threatened the lake. The government had to abolish all the fish farms that were once there. There are just a few ponds that have not been flushed. These sites can be the opportunity to put a new biological aquaculture "zero discharge" into the lake.

In order to develop a local and sustainable economic activity, the establishment of an organic production of sturgeon caviar is proposed as an example of organic fish farming. Indeed, the climate of Kangping lends itself particularly well to this type of fish farm with high added value. This form of production, referred to as "organic aquaculture", is the production of healthy, high-quality foods, controlling as much as possible the impact on the environment and respecting animal welfare. Organic aquaculture is an alternative form of production to intensive or industrial fish farming and responds to the growing demand for biological fish products. The aim is to develop sustainable and locally sustainable water resources and produce a high value-added food: caviar. Other by-products are possible, such as the sturgeon pulpit or sturgeon leather.

This project aims to support a rural economic activity for the local populations: in addition to allowing the production and sale of quality products, visiting activities of the site can be proposed, increasing the attractiveness of tourism in the region. Moreover, this activity will allow the creation of diversified jobs and added value added.
